I Am Potential–Science Cafe & Impromptu Concert

Patrick Henry Hughes is a well-known musician, motivational speaker, and author. In fact, he’s working hard to begin his dream career and still takes piano lessons. It would be easy to look at Patrick’s list of achievements and assume his life has been an easy one, but that’s nowhere near the truth. Born without eyes or the ability to completely straighten his arms and legs, Patrick’s story is one of strength, grit, support, and determination. Patrick began playing piano as a toddler and cultivated a love of music that led him to the marching band at the University of Louisville. Rather than play his trumpet from the sidelines, Patrick’s father pushed him around the field in formation so that he could perform with the band at every practice and game.

The Hughes family story reminds us that obstacles can be conquered and our lives are what we make of them. Patrick graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Spanish from the University of Louisville. He dreams of continuing his studies and eventually working in a Foreign Service capacity. The name of Patrick’s book (and the movie about his life) is I Am Potential. After listening to his talk, I think we all left considering our own potential. What is your potential and what are you doing to reach it?
